March On
When a masked man invites me to join a March for Renewable Energy in Washington, D.C., in August 2009, you could say I'm a little skeptical.
Too young in the Sixties to join any protest marches, I don't have a lot of experience in demonstrations. I have done some walking in my time, but for charitable causes. (Perhaps we could consider renewable energy a charity?)
Anyway, Capt. William J. Ozone has a fairly decent resume. According to the Web, he led a media campaign to save the Pacific Northwest salmon, helped school kids become active through an ecological PSA contest, and even demonstrated to crowds that hemp oil can be used to power chain saws and figuratively "cut" petrol use.
He says, "This will be the very first peaceful demonstration of its kind in America, receiving national news coverage that will raise public awareness and support for renewable energy far and wide! Some people claim that I'm the most phenomenal environmental activist of all time. Even John McCain publicly nicknamed Al Gore “Captain Ozone” after me in '96." (Will, I'm not sure that is a good thing.)
See for yourself at http://captainozone.com/ or http://changents.com/captainozone or don't. Because you might find some disturbing things about him: He says he travels through time on a toilet, his weapon of choice is a toilerang, and he admits to occasionally having bad gas.
I don't really think he's the captain of renewable energy, but he does get your attention.
By the way, Capt. Ozone says Environmental Media Northwest also is sponsoring the march. It is a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization based in Bellingham, Wash.
