Beazer East, Inc. began cleanup at a former Koppers Wood-Treating Site in Carbondale, Illinois on October 14.
The cleanup that will span 16 acres of soil is required under an Administrative Order of Consent. Initial efforts to clean up the site were started in 2004.
The process began with the clearing of trees and brush on the first day. Later this month, soil excavation and cover construction will start and run through January 2021.
The Koppers Wood-Treating Facility treated chemical preservatives during its years of operation from 1902 through 1991. Chemicals that were released during that time contaminated portions of the site as well as nearby waterways.
